Established officially at the end of 2003, this first Resource Center in Mexico offers education and research support to the Spanish-speaking GIS community (using Geographic Information Systems) of Mexico and Central America. The IRC-UAEM consists of four complementary institutions with the following specialties: water sciences, geographic sciences, agricultural sciences and urban and regional planning.

Applications with IDRISI are developed in each field of specialization:
- water sciences, with a special focus on human health impact of water availability and quality;
- geographic sciences, including socio-economic aspects;
- agricultural sciences, still a key sector in this region;
- urban and regional planning, also critical for the high rate of population and industrialization growth of the zone.

Current activities include user conferences, training workshops and procurement assistance.
