Product Reviews 1 "IDRISI continues to build on its unparalleled selection of image classification modules... --Jason T. Herrmann, IDRISI Andes Edition Enhances Modules, Adds Land Change Modeler, Earth Imaging Journal, November/December 2006. Download a PDF of the IDRISI Andes software review in Earth Imaging Journal. 1 1 "IDRISI's academic origins are evident in the many sophisticated and innovative algorithms it includes. To take just one example, the range of classification modules in IDRISI is amongst the best of any remote sensing package: 8 hard classifiers, including a neural network classifier, 5 soft classifiers and related hardeners, and a suite of hard and soft hyperspectral classifiers..." 1 "Strengths? IDRISI has many but the 32-bit versions sport a delightfully intuitive and easy to use GUI, an impressive range of GIS and image processing functionality, comprehensive help, tutorials for new users, a small system 'footprint' of 128Mb, and entry-level system requirements that run the full package on the lowest specification machines. All this for a very modest sum makes IDRISI a very attractive package.... With Kilimanjaro, it is all change, with a slick, controllable interface plus other welcome features such as enhanced cartographic symbolisation, layer blending, background transparency, interactive RGB compositing, scale-dependent visibility, viewing of 3D stereo images (glasses provided) and 3D interactive fly-through." 1 "For many users, Kilimanjaro's most exciting new feature is the 3-D Interactive Fly-Through module. The setup is similar to the ORTHO module, in which users choose a surface image such as a digital elevation model (DEM) and an optional drape image. The flight controls are easy to use and can be set to slow, medium or fast, and the results are spectacular." 1 "There are several reasons why IDRISI has become one of the most widely distributed raster GIS softwares. The clarity of the training exercises (with provided datasets) and explanation of GIS principles is exceptional. The wide range of analysis and modelling operations provide users with a powerful set of tools that highlight the potentials of the core of GIS while also retaining effective map display creation. The combination of raster GIS and digital image processing modules in an integrated package is likely unsurpassed in the GIS market. Attention to areas of increasing demand, such as Change Analysis, reflects a flexible response to users' needs." 1 "With all its enhancements related to data importing and exporting, image processing, and modeling and analysis, Idrisi32 Release 2 builds well on the strengths of previous Idrisi developments in the area of spatial decision support. Impressive analytical functionality and ease-of-use would prompt me to recommend this package to anyone with serious interest in spatial data analysis... As developers forge ahead on important paths for the future of GIS applications, IDRISI will surely maintain a very strong position in the marketplace." 1 "The new release provides a wide range of analytical GIS, remote sensing, decision support and statistical capabilities at an exceptional price." 1 "Given its affordable cost and the level of support, [Idrisi32] offers a very attractive GIS/DIP software package for many people, but goes beyond many [other software packages] in terms of its analytical functionality and ease of use." 1 "The IDRISI software provides a wealth of analytical capabilities at an exceptional price.... This is an exciting product. It is showing the maturity of a decade or more of development. It is reflecting advances in GIS analytical techniques. It displays a thoughtful, coherent approach to spatial modeling." 1 "IDRISI provides a powerful suite of geostatistics and decision support modules...has the most extensive suite of statistical and geostatistical operations...[and] the most complete suite of buffering and cost-surface capabilities..." 1 "...no better software exists for scientists wishing to analyze and model the real world." 1 |
